What Is Sport Shooting

Sport shooting is a competition involving various types of firearms such as rifles, handguns, shotguns, black powder & smoothbore rifles, etc. Hunting was also considered a shooting sport and indeed shooting live pheasants was an Olympic event in 1900. Shooting sport is a competitive sport included in all major sporting events. The shooting sports are categorized by the type of firearm, targets, and distances at which the targets are shot. During the 1900 Olympic games, Men & Women competed in 78 different events. http://www.olympic.org/paris-1900-summer-olympics.

Sport Shooting of traditional stationary and moving targets, has evolved to include several action oriented sports as well, including Cowboy Action, IPSC and IDPA.

Although a large part of organized international sporting events, most sport shooters participate at the club level. Most clubs events are open to skill, age levels regardless of mobility.

Shooting is not a seasonal with some disciplines shooting all year outdoors. Because sport shooting participants are often the best trained and qualified firearms handlers, the safety record is unsurpassed.
